It's that time again, another heartwarming movie hit me in the feels. The Prom Chad Beguelin (The Wedding singer and Aladdin),Bob Martin (Elf), Jack Viertel, and Ryan Murphy put together the most amazing coming of age and equality musical film I have seen all year. With everything going on this year it meant so much to me. Seeing something come out like this warmed me and gave me chills. We had Meryl Streep and Keegan-Michael Key kiss! We had Nicole Kidman act her heart out with James Cordon boosting the confidence of a teen girl who needed a win.
The summary is pretty simple. Four Broadway actors are struck with bad reviews and dead-end acting jobs. They feel that they need to do some PR of their own, so they find a cause to make themselves look better. They find Emma (Jo Ellen Pellman ) a teen girl who just wants to go to prom in Indiana like any other kid. The PTA cancels it but when the troupe shows up and the news complains it is back on. The PTA throws two proms one for the "NORMAL" kids and then one just for Emma. After allowing herself to be sad and finding her courage with the help of the acting troupe she finds a way to make everything better.
This movie brought goose bumps, shivers, and a smile to my face. Meryl Streep is one of my favorite performers and every movie I see her in I just have to watch! I just watch Jingle Jangle with Keegan-Michael Key as the antagonist, so it was nice to see him play the opposite role. This movie isn't just about Emma, it is also about the character arc of the troupe individually. We have Meryl Streep as a narcissistic actor who only cares for herself start caring and loving others then herself. We have James Cordon go from a selfish gay man who needs to find forgiveness. Nicole Kidman gets the role she has dreamed of and then Andrew Randels gets his role that he needs.
The music was great! Choreography phenomenal! The acting was on point! I would gladly recommend this musical to any of my fellow musical lovers.
A sad story about myself. I never got to go to prom. I was invited to the gay pride prom for my 16th birthday and didn’t get to attend because of a family event. Those are more important. My senior prom I was pregnant with my daughter and couldn't go. So anytime I watch a prom themed movie (Carrie included) I feel like I am experiencing what it would have been like. As romanticized as that is it helps me not fill myself with glee instead of regret. Nothing ever really goes %100 as planned. However, you can always make the best of it through love and kindness. This movie showed a lot of that! Again, the movie is on Netflix, soundtrack on all music streaming services. I am currently listening to it on Apple Music.
