Gardening is hard work, there is so much prep and planning that you have to do, along with caring for the plants. Animals are another story, completely! However, it is amazing work that keeps me moving.

When I decided to live on a homestead or a farm, I was in the final year of my BFA degree at Full Sail University. My goal while there was to learn how to become a famous author. Needless to say, it has been a year and that still hasn't happened. World-wide everyone was confined to their homes due to a pandemic no one saw coming.

While I was at home with my two school-aged kiddos, husband, and sister, I had decided that homesteading sounded like a great way to keep us busy while we were isolated. Usually, during the summers, we would be at a pool or going on adventures. Sadly, we couldn't do that. So, I sat at home attempting multiple different hobbies out and to no avail.

Sewing was fun but so tedious because no one wanted to do it with me. Cutting patterns and sewing in silence is SO BORING! Yes, I had music, but it wasn't enough.

I went back to painting but ran out of canvas. With the shortages of everything, it was hard to find canvas. I had resorted to painting old jeans that didn't fit anyone in the house. That got boring eventually.

Crocheting was well, same as sewing. No one wanted to do it with me. I got bored with that too.

I will say this, every spring we always start a garden. The usual herbs, fruits, and veggies we eat regularly. While I was at the local farm and barn store, I found baby chicks. I had told my husband I wanted chickens for a few years now. Well, that day, I had decided I wanted them right then and there. I bought them. I came home with three little peeps that we named; Dream, George, and Buttercup.

Sadly, Butter Cup is no longer with us, but that is another story for another time. Right now, I'm talking about starting a homestead.

Anywho, that is how it started. I texted my sister and told her to clean the garage. My husband was confused because that was not a normal request for my sister to get from me. His thought was, "Shit what is she bringing home!?"

When I got home with these three fluffy feathered babies I handed them to him. They are all cheeping in the transport box, and when he saw the chicks inside, he was hooked. We raised them inside our kitchen instead of the garage. We ordered a coop. Then once they were old enough to go outside, we put them in their coop.

Now, we get free eggs and save some money on buying eggs. However, that did start a small addiction, because now I am boarding my girlfriends Teddywidders and Lionheads. We have fifteen rabbits outside in a rabbitry. I have two of my own Mini-Rex/Vlops inside, and well, we just recently rescued three kittens.

My husband told us if we come home with more animals, we will be in very BIG trouble. So, no more animals until next spring. Why? Because my dear reader, we get more chickens.
